Participation and Sign Up Information

Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are invited and encouraged to be part of Mills’ UIL team. Each event will be limited to the first 30 students who sign up. Those students will attend practices and compete in our Mills’ Qualifier Meet on November 15th, 2023.

The top three winners from the campus meet will compete at the District meet on March 2, 2024.

EVENTS: (specific to grade levels)

● Spelling (3rd): write down words as given by the pronouncer (about 5 wpm)

● Ready Writing (3rd, 4th): given 2 prompts, choose one to write about

● Number Sense (4th; 5th): mental math challenges using strategies

● Social Studies (5th): answer objective-based social studies questions

TIMELINE:

● Oct 4th - Last day to register to participate; sign up closes at 3:30

● October 6th - Team information sent home

● October/November- Event practice (Wednesdays: 3:20 - 4:15) 

           ○ October 11, 18, 25 ; November 1, 8

● November 15 - Mills’ Qualifier Meet (3:30-4:30)

● January/February - Event practices (for district qualifiers) (Wednesdays: 3:20 - 4:15)

           ○ Dates: January 10, 24; February 7, 21, 28

● March 2, 2024- District UIL meet @ Travis High School

WHAT IS EXPECTED:

● Register online by October 4th at the following link: UIL Sign Up

● Commit to attend practice every week as outlined (for Mills and district meet)

● Commit to compete in the Mills’ meet and the district meet (for qualifiers)

● Miss no more than one practice

● Stay for the entire practice - no leaving practice early to attend another after-school activity

● Pick up your student on time for each practice

● Bring a snack (you can also donate snacks!)

● Positive student attitude required
