Report an Absence

Attendance matters logo sprinkled with school supplies

Austin ISD is required to submit attendance to the Texas Education Agency at 10:30AM everyday. Please try to schedule appointments for your student after school, but if that is too difficult, try and schedule medical appointments after 10:30 AM.

Every Day Counts

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Absences and tardiness impact the whole classroom. Parents: Making sure your student is in school and on time every day is the law. For information regarding attendance, please visit the AISD attendance FAQ. If your child is going to be absent, there are two ways to report it. We do not accept phone calls or voicemail messages as documentation for a student's absence.

Option 1

Please send an email to mills@austinisd.org and your child’s teacher. Our registrar and attendance specialist, Kristi Thomason, needs parents to include the following information:

1) The student’s first and last name,

2) The date they will be missing school, &

3) The reason they will be missing school.

Have a doctor’s note for an absence? Send it to mills@austinisd.org asap or within 48 hours if possible. Please allow up to 72 hours (3 business days) for attendance to be corrected. Have a question? Email our attendance specialist Kristi Thomason!

Option 2

Parents can report absences online via AISD's new absence reporting form. Please scroll to the bottom of the page & do not forget to hit that submit button. Documentation can be uploaded online or turned into the front office.

Absences & Tardies

A student is tardy if he/she is not with their homeroom teacher when the 7:45 bell rings. If you arrive late to school, your student will be required to come to the office for a tardy slip before going to class. Students attending family trips during scheduled school days will remain coded as an unexcused absence. Car problems, traffic, or oversleeping will not be considered as an excused absence or excused tardy.

Set up notifications for your student’s attendance and grades via Parent Self Serve.

What to do if your student must leave school early:

  • When you arrive t Mills to pick up your student, please be prepared with your photo I.D. Your student will be called to the attendance office and provided with a permit to leave campus.
  • Please do not plan to pick up your student from school 30 minutes prior to dismissal (ie 2:40 PM).

You must sign the student out in the office. Leaving for any part of the day will result in an unexcused tardy. Students leaving for a medical appointment must bring a note from the doctor to excuse the absence/tardy.
